The PIER State Partnership for Energy Efficient Demonstrations brings newly developed building technologies and deployment approaches into effective use throughout a wide range of California venues. These include the University of California, California State University, and California Community College campus systems; the state Department of General Services; and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. In particular, the program aims to demonstrate and apply new lighting and HVAC technologies in various campus settings. Program elements include pilot projects, multicampus purchases, field data collection, technology evaluations, and information dissemination throughout these demonstration sites. This program is managed by the California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) as part of the University of California.

The demonstration program highlights technologies developed under a unique collaborative process that leverages public research and development funds to help manufacturers bring innovative, energy-efficient products into the commercial marketplace.

RD_PIPELINE

The SPEED market transformation program has completed more than 100 demonstration sites and offers case studies, design specifications, and other information on the demonstrations. The 25 PIER technologies could save California residents 2 billion to 5 billion kilowatt-hours, equaling $287 million to $718 million with 10-25% market penetration, or between 788,000 and almost 2 million tons of carbon each year. In addition, SPEED activities support new companies and green jobs, change codes, stimulate new products and market penetration, and are adopted by IOU incentive programs and implemented as standards.

More information is available on the 2004-2010 PIER SPEED Demonstration Program and individual technologies, or view a map of PIER technology demonstrations.

This program's funding is provided by the California Energy Commission's Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program. The program supports the development and market connection of innovative energy-efficiency technologies and practices.
