What is this stuff?

The plots below are for one loop detector on the freeway when there was congestion. The plots below are for single lanes. Lane 1 is the HOV lane and there is pretty much never very much traffic in it so the plots look boring and hence aren't included.

There are four plots for each lane. The time units are in 30 seconds per point, the flow is in vehicles per lane per hour, the speed is in miles per hour and the occupancy is just percent. The big plot just gives you a feel of what the various parameters do over time. The next three give you the relationships between the variables.

This data is unfiltered and hence is probably pretty noisy.

You can download the data for these plots from this file.

Note that the characteristics of the speed-flow curve is a function of many things including the number of trucks on the road and the weather.
