Flow Characteristic Plots - incident
One type of plot that you can get out of the loop data are the
characteristic traffic flow plots.
The flowing plots were obtained during the morning shift of 2/18/93.
The density plot for the southbound section of the freeway is given
below.
Density Plot

A map of the various loop detector
locations is available. As well as a key to
the incident boxes on the density plots.
The following characteristic traffic flow plots were
obtained from loop detector #12 from 5:00am
until 10:00am. Note from the density plot that during this time period
there were two major incidents that caused quite a big buildup of
density.
Speed vs Flow
Speed vs Occupancy
Flow vs Occupancy
As opposed to the incident free conditions
these characteristic plots show quite a bit more.
Some things to note:
- The loop data used had an output period of 30 seconds.
- The loop data has been smoothed with an exponential filter with a
weight of 0.9.
- The characteristic plots were made from the aggregate over all
lanes. So the flow is the sum of the flow over all the lanes.
